Speedy bag

Why the Louis Vuitton Speedy is back in 2026

The Louis Vuitton Speedy never really disappeared, but it has definitely become interesting again.

For years, it was one of those bags that was always there. Classic, recognisable, easy to buy – but not necessarily the bag people were getting excited about.

That feels different in 2026.

The Speedy has been appearing more often in fashion coverage and on celebrities, including Rihanna, Tyla and Alexa Chung. It also fits neatly into the wider return of 2000s fashion, when Louis Vuitton Monogram was everywhere.

The Speedy got too familiar

The Speedy was hugely visible in the 2000s, alongside the Neverfull and Louis Vuitton’s colourful Murakami bags.

At some point, that popularity made it feel less special. It became a safe Louis Vuitton choice rather than a particularly fashionable one.

Now, enough time has passed for that to work in its favour.

A lot of fashion from the late 1990s and 2000s is being revisited, and the Speedy is an obvious part of that. For younger buyers, it can even feel relatively new.

Louis Vuitton’s renewed collaboration with Takashi Murakami has probably helped too. The Multicolore Monogram is closely tied to the same period, and seeing it again naturally puts bags like the Speedy back in focus.

Louis Vuitton is putting the Speedy back in the spotlight

The timing is not accidental.

2026 marks the 130th anniversary of Louis Vuitton’s Monogram, and the house has been heavily promoting some of its most established bags, including the Speedy.

Louis Vuitton has released new versions through its Monogram Origine, VVN, Time Trunk and Monogram Emblème collections. Zendaya also fronts the house’s current Speedy campaign.

Under Pharrell Williams, the Speedy has also become an important part of Louis Vuitton menswear. His colourful leather versions have helped take a bag traditionally associated with women’s accessories into a different context.

Why the Speedy still works

The other reason the Speedy keeps coming back is that the design is simple.

It is light, easy to carry, available in several sizes and not especially formal. The softer shape also feels more current than some of the very structured bags that dominated luxury fashion a few years ago.

The Monogram version is instantly recognisable, but the bag itself is fairly understated in shape.

That balance is probably why it has lasted so long.

The Speedy never really left

Calling the Speedy a comeback is therefore slightly misleading.

Louis Vuitton has continued selling it throughout all the changes in handbag trends. What has changed is the way people are looking at it.

For a while, the Speedy was simply a classic. In 2026, it looks like an It bag again.
