I just got exciting news about Louis Vuitton’s 2025 Spring/Summer collection: it’s a new Takashi Murakami and Louis Vuitton collab!
The upcoming collection, like the previous one, prominently features Takashi Murakami’s multicolored designs. This season also introduces Murakami’s iconic panda-motifs to a lot more variety of bags.
Before diving into the new collection, let’s revisit the original collaboration. First launched in 2003, the Takashi Murakami x Louis Vuitton collaboration became one of the brand’s biggest successes, remaining in production until it was discontinued in 2015. Some standout pieces from the collaboration include: the mini wallet with a buckle, the cherry blossom Papillon shoulder bag with ribbon and lock accessories, the multicolor Speedy with a front pocket and metal corner accents, the Monogramouflage pattern (a camouflage-monogram hybrid), the Alma bag with pockets and studded leather bottoms, the Trouville bag with a large stud-lined pocket, and the Cosmic Blossom design featuring Murakami’s signature smiling flowers in pink and red.
Design-wise, the new collaboration takes a subtler approach. While the multicolored monogram on white and black backgrounds remains, this year’s collection exudes more class and sophistication. The previous designs were known for their bold vachetta leather, sharp corners with studs, and abundant gold hardware, including chains. In contrast, the 2025 designs are cleaner and more refined. Sneak peek photos show a multicolor Speedy with minimal detailing, featuring only a ribbon leather trim and a lock-motif accessory on the handle, as well as a more compact Trouville bag. Another highlight is the Speedy Soft, a slouchy, soft-leather Speedy featuring a black multicolor monogram print. The black handles, silver hardware, and silver corners create a more understated, versatile piece suited for today’s “quiet luxury” trend. Similarly, the mini Speedy now comes with black leather, giving it a more polished and less casual look compared to its earlier vachetta version.
Building on the popularity of Louis Vuitton’s 2023 bumbag release, the 2025 collection includes a Murakami multicolor bumbag. This version, with its vachetta leather-lined pocket and studs, feels more feminine and playful compared to the typically sporty and masculine look of standard bumbags.
The Capucines series also joins the collaboration. A sneak peek reveals cheerful flower and grass motifs painted on the front of a white Capucines bag, adding a lively twist to this classic silhouette.
Bag charms featuring Murakami’s iconic “Superflat” Panda are another highlight. The panda motif appear across various pieces, including the Capucines, Monogram OnTheGo, black Keepall, Pochette Accessoires, blue empreinte leather OnTheGo, and Alma BB.
Murakami’s smiling flower motifs return on several items, including the Neverfull, Monogram Keepall, Speedy 20, pencil cases, diary folders, Toiletry Pouches, and the Petite Malle mini trunk bag with calfskin leather trim. This time, the smiling flowers grow from the bottom of the bags or combine with Louis Vuitton’s monogram flower motifs, subtly enhancing the standard monogram pattern. This understated use of Murakami’s vibrant designs aligns with the collection’s overall elegance.
Notably, there don’t appear to be any cherry blossom motifs in this collection so far. Given their continued popularity in the second-hand market, it’s possible they may make a comeback in future additions if this collaboration proves successful.
The 2025 collaboration’s defining characteristic is its lack of flashiness compared to earlier iterations. While Y2K aesthetics are trendy, Louis Vuitton has opted for a more refined reinterpretation, blending nostalgia with modern sophistication. Although official information about the 2025 Spring/Summer season hasn’t been publicly released yet and much of this is based on rumours, I hope you enjoyed this article and that it sparked some excitement for what’s to come. I can’t want to see the Takashi Murakami x Louis Vuitton Collab items in real life next year!
