The Neverfull bag, an iconic staple of Louis Vuitton, has gained popularity since its debut in 2007. The blend of style and practicality has made the bag one of the best-sellers of all time and the most recognizable styles of the brand. Today, I’m going to break down why this bag has become such a hit and why you really need one if you don’t already have it. I hope this review of the Louis Vuitton’s Neverfull bag will help your decision 🙂
Why has the Neverfull has always been an “it” bag? It is mostly because of the simple design – Neverfull is a very simple, classic tote bag. It does have a pocket but that is the only compartment it has. Some people don’t like the Neverfull because they find it too casual for their taste. To some extent, I agree—it might not be the ideal bag to take to an expensive restaurant since it is, after all, a tote bag. However, aside from that, I can imagine using this bag almost anywhere.
The bag is available in three sizes—PM (smallest), MM (medium), and GM (largest). A lot of people use PM for a casual drink or lunch, MM for shopping and most daily needs, and GM for travels. Even the PM can hold lot more things than you can imagine. Unlike some extremely tiny bags in the current market, the Neverfull PM can still hold sizeable items like a water bottle, full size wallet, an iPad, handkerchief, etc. For the MM, I bring it almost everywhere—gym, grocery shopping, casual outings where I need to bring a shawl, studying, work… the list goes on. It can easily hold a laptop, a pair of trainers, a large makeup pouch, a water bottle, etc. I also have a dedicated review on Neverful GM as a diaper bag so check this out if you are keen. The Neverfull bag pairs well with everything from jeans and a t-shirt to a business suit or a dress and that is why a lot of people love the bag.
Also, did you know that you can change the shape of the bag? The side laces allow the bag to be adjusted for a more compact or spacious look, adapting to various styles and occasions.

Personally, I don’t mind taking it out even on rainy days because most of the bag is made of a very strong, almost dirt- and water-resistant canvas, except for the leather handles, side strings and trims along the top. Since the leather handles and side strings are quite thin, any water spots that appear are barely noticeable. And even if they do show, they will eventually blend in as the leather develops a natural patina over time. In that sense, the Neverfull tote bag is a very well-designed choice for daily life.

The detachable pouch is also a standout feature. I actually use the pouch as a clutch bag almost everywhere and probably use it more often than the bag 🤣 It can be used to store essentials such as keys, phones, or makeup, or carried separately as a sleek clutch. The bag’s wide, flat base allows it to stand upright, making it easy to access contents without spilling. If you’re worried about items spilling out or being too visible from the outside, you can use a scarf as a cover or purchase a bag organizer with a zippered top.
My Instagram shows how I carry my Neverfull pouch and what fits inside – go check it out 🦊 I’m still amazed at how much it can hold. You can fit a medium-sized phone and your key fobs in just one pouch. 😁

One of the obvious cons of the bag is its wide opening. Since it doesn’t have a zipper closure but only a single clasp, some people might worry that items could fall out when the bag is tilted or that the contents might be too visible or easily stolen. However, this is less likely than you might imagine. As a shoulder bag, you typically carry it under your arm, which naturally closes the bag. Given its size, it’s very unlikely that something would fall out unnoticed. You’d probably notice if someone tried to grab something from inside while you’re holding the bag.
In my experience, when I took the MM on a long-haul flight to Japan, nothing inside fell out. I pushed the bag under the seat in front of me, so there was no ‘opening,’ and I placed a cardigan and shawl on top of everything. That said, I get that some people aren’t fans of the wide opening. Personally, I keep my valuables like my passport and wallet in the inside pocket, so I don’t worry too much about losing important stuff. If you have the GM, it has a much bigger compartment inside, so you’ll definitely have enough space to keep everything safe.
Another way to tackle these concerns is by using a bag organizer. A lot of people swear by them, and some even have a zip closure on top, which is perfect if you’re into that extra security. Plus, bag organizers are great for keeping the inside of your bag clean. The Neverfull isn’t made of real leather except for the trims and shoulder straps, and the interior is cotton, so if it gets dirty—like from ink or spilled coffee—it can be a bit of a hassle to clean.
True to its name, the Neverfull can carry an impressive amount of items without losing its shape or style. Whether used for work, travel, or daily errands, the bag’s capacity and durability make it a reliable companion. Limited editions and collaborations are also available from time to time. Special editions featuring artwork or unique colourways have created exciting new takes on the classic design. Check out some of the recent additions, such as Murakami’s collab in 2025.
